- Conversions that allow you to drive from wheelchair
- Joystick steering and foot steering

- Adapted mirrors to aid vision if you have neck problems
- Adapted seat belts, harnesses or safety belts
- Wheelchair storage
- Electronic ring accelerators
- All wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAV) converted from cars and vans
Car insurance for disabled drivers and adapted vehicles
If your vehicle is modified in any way to cater for your disability, it is wise to talk to a specialist. In the event of an accident, you want to be sure that your adaptations are covered on a like-for-like basis and that you are dealing with people who know the difference between the various types of vehicle controls or access enhancements.
We aim to help disabled drivers gain access to the vehicle of their choice, whether that is a Caterham, adapted M3 or a wheelchair-accessible GMC van. If a number of people help take you around in the car, we have any driver cover available to help get you the cover you need.
Why choose Adrian Flux?
Our founder, Adrian Flux, was a disabled driver himself and was continually denied insurance for his Spartan kit car. This prompted him to set up Adrian Flux in 1973, and looking after the needs of disabled motorists has been a priority ever since.
Here at Adrian Flux, we know there are lots of different ways you’d want to adapt your car if you have a disability or mobility issues.
From accessories that make it easier to get in and out of the car to automatic steering assistance, with the appropriate adaptations, there’s no need to lose your independence or the freedom of the road. We know that the right kinds of adaptations can make you drive just as well as anyone else on the road, so we’re not afraid to get you a suitable insurance policy.
Wide range of extra benefits available
We offer a wide range of extra benefits that you can add to your policy, including the following:
New for old
If your vehicle adaptations are lost or damaged and covered by this policy, we will pay for repair or replacement on a new-for-old basis. This means we’ll replace the old modification with a new version of the same value.
Manual wheelchair cover
Your manual wheelchair will be covered against accidental damage or loss while it is kept in your vehicle. Cover up to £1,500.
Loss of use
Can’t use your vehicle because it has been stolen or damaged? If our approved repairer is unable to supply you with a suitable courtesy car and the loss or damage is covered by your policy, we will pay up to £50 per day for a maximum of 14 days towards the cost of a taxi, bus, train or hire car.
FAQs
If you currently receive benefits for a mobility-related disability, you should be able to lease a car from the Motability scheme. Up to three people can be insured on a Motability car as long as they have a valid driving licence. This could include friends, family and carers. To find out more, read our in-depth guide to Motability insurance rules.
Some disabled drivers are exempt from paying road tax. If any of the following apply to you, you could be eligible for road tax exemption:
- Higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
- Armed Forces Independence Payment

To find out more, read our blog on what medical conditions must be declared for car insurance. This covers other conditions you must disclose, government bodies you need to declare medical conditions to, and the impact your condition might have on your insurance.
