Fincham makes successful Superstock debut

Fearless bike racer Mark Fincham has taken his national Superstock debut in his stride, slicing through the field to make up 13 places from the back of the grid at Brands Hatch at the end of October.

The former King's Lynn Marine, who lost a leg in a motorcycle accident in 2007, took his place in the 40 strong field for the final round of the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Championship just four months after escaping serious injury in a 120mph crash at Donnington. After qualifying in 39th place, Mark had to start at the back of the grid after switching from wet tyres to dry at the last minute when he spotted a dry strip on the circuit and clearing skies.

"I was delighted to have qualified for my first national race at the first attempt," said Mark, who is sponsored by Chartwell Insurance, which specialises in providing affordable insurance for people with disabilities.

The Superstock series is a proving ground for promising riders looking to make the step up to Superbike level, the final round of which was also held at the track at the weekend. The race was over 14 laps of the three-and-a-half mile Grand Prix circuit, and Mark said: "Straight away I made up a couple of places before the first turn. "I couldn't believe it - I was passing people at national level. As the race went on I managed to pass more people, but not having a pit board I had no idea how long we had to go or what position I was in.

"I rode hard in tricky and still slippery conditions, and finished in 27th place. Riding in front of 50,000 people and against the country's best riders was such an amazing experience I can't wait to do it again."

Next season Mark is planning to enter more Superstock races to gain further experience, while also competing in the MRO Powerbike series. "I want to make sure I am fast enough. Although happy with this result on my first try I want to be further up on the finishing times," he said.
